Is it possible to get a breast augmentation and successfully breastfeed afterward? How common is it to breastfeed with implants? What are the best kind of breast implants to get?

* please do not respond with a comment that no one needs breast implants b/c I know peoples opinions vary on this subject. I would really like answers to these questions, thank you*

A lot of people seem to assume you can't, but it is indeed possible to breastfeed after a breast augmentation. The incision is key, though. There are 3 standard incisions in a breast augmentation: through the armpit, under the breast, and along the border of the areola (skin around the nipple).

Of these 3, the areola incision carries the most risk. It has its benefits in terms of surgery outcome (can help with symmetry), but there's a slight risk of nerve damage. The nerves around the areola are vital to milk production, so if you really want to breastfeed eventually, it's best to opt for the incision in the fold of the breast or through the armpit.

The type of implant doesn't matter quite as much as incision. Obviously, silicone was a controversial implant material until its recent reapproval. But breast implant substances are found naturally in the body, so there is fairly low risk should your implant leak while you're producing milk.

It's also important to remember that your body goes through a lot of changes during pregnancy...the hormones, the weight fluctuation, and of course, the breast swelling (and often subsequent sagging). In the end, many women choose to save their breast surgery until after they're done breastfeeding. But this is a personal decision and will depend on your priorities and timeline.

I have a 3 1/2 week old infant AND IMPLANTS (done 6 yrs ago). I breastfeed, but the surgery DID damage a few milk ducts so I also formula feed as well.
The crap about WHERE the implants are put IN does not matter!! I consulted several doctors and THERE IS NO GUARANTEE that you can or can't breastfeed afterwords. Mine are saline and were placed under the muscle, under the breast (*supposed* to be best bet!). Also you DO NOT LOOSE SENSITIVITY AFTERWORDS.
Good luck!

Yes, i think its possible since those implants are only situated below the skin and above the precious mammary glands. Pls discuss this also with your doctor. God bless

Your breasts aregoing to get bigger if your pregnant anyway so why worry about the implants? After breast augmentation surgey your breasts just become decorations. You also lose sensitivity in your breasts.
