What is +/- mean in hockey? I am guessing it could mean goals scored Vs goals allowed when a particular person is on the ice....but if that is the case, wouldn't it be hard for the officials to determine who is out on the ice each time?

every team has statisticians at every game, and the NHL does too, I think, to gather all the information.
A goal is scored for your team when your on the ice gives you a plus 1. If your on the ice when you get scored upon, you get a minus 1. This is not so much indicative of the player, more for the team strength and when a player is on the ice. Offensive forwards generally have plus ratings. Even the best defense man may have a minus rating. A strong team that scores a lot and everyone on the team may be a plus.

You have got it plus minus is a statistic that is based on the goals your on the ice for and the goals your on the ice against. In some circumstances the referees may take care of this particular stat but most of the time the teams all have seperate people to do this.

Plus/Minus is strictly this: when teams are at EVEN strength (3 on 3, 4 on 4, or 5 on 5) a plus one is given to each offensive player on the team that scored a goal and a minus one is given to each defensive player that was on the ice as well. The only exception is a shorthanded goal -- the same rules apply.

These are calculated on even strength goals..makes it even harder..When the whistle blows the official scorer has time to double-check who was on the ice..

i think the guys upstairs look at the video and see whos on the ice. i dont think the refs say whos on the ice when, im pretty sure they just announce who scored and potential assists to the scorebox.

Also, powerplay points do not count for a +/- rating for either team. A short handed goal however does affect your +/- rating.
