It depends on the temperature of the cream and the coffee. If the coffee was piping hot and the cream ice cold then the cream would have an impact on the overall temperature. If the cream was room temperature and the coffee piping hot the cream would have a negligible impact on the coffee. If the coffee and the cream were both the same temperature the coffee would stay the same temperature. In either case it depends on the temperature of the cream and the amount of cream you are adding to the coffee, but in most cases you would not notice the drop in temperature.

The rate of heat transfer from the coffee to the atmosphere is higher when the temperature difference is higher. By adding the cream right away, you slightly reduce the temperature difference between the coffee and the air, so you will slightly reduce the rate of heat loss from the coffee. You coffee will be a a warmer temperature for consumption a little bit longer by adding the cream right away.

The first poster is overlooking the fact that the cream has its own cooling effect, assuming the cream is cooler than the coffee. Cold cream poured creates turbulence, and will cool the coffee faster than pouring it in gently. Room temperature cream will affect the coffee's temperature far less, of course.

Add as soon as you get it. The cream will form a thin layer on top that will reduce evaporative cooling.

It depends on the temperature. We usually warm our milk and then add it to our coffee so there is no change in temperature. MMM. strong coffee with milk! One of life's simple pleasures!
