or does he just continue to check everything externally? I was just wondering how everyone knows when they are dilating.

My doctors with my three children never did an internal exam after the initial visit until I was within three weeks of my due date. Then, I was only checked once with my third pregnancy, never with my other two. Usually a doctor does not worry that you might be dialating unless you are having contractions or you have begun to lose your mucus plug or you are having some other problem. I would not worry about it unless you suspect you might be going into premature labor.

I was never checked to see if I was dilating during any of my checkups while I was pregnant. The only time I ever got checked was when I was in labor and they would check me at the hospital. I think that's normally how it goes. Unless there are problems, they usually won't check to see how dilated you are unless you're in labor or you're past your due date.

It just depends with my last child I went into preterm labor at 33 weeks and so after that she checked me every week I went. Other than that my other 2 children the Dr. started checking at about 37 weeks.

There is no reason to check to see if a woman is dilated except for when she is in active labor.Did you know that everytime you are checked you run a risk of infection that can lead to your baby?

Most doctors check around 36-37 weeks to see if you are dilating....some may check sooner if you have problems.

They check when you have been in labour a long time, not before.

Checking before has no real importance as it can't predict when you will go into labour and only serves to introduce bacteria onto the cervix where it can cause a problem.
