Depends on what your looking for, if your looking for functionality, then you have several choices, if you want to follow like sheep, then get an iPod.
No question that the iPod has dominated the market, but that doesn't make it the best.
I had one I ditched it.
Look at a couple of different choices:

http://www.sandisk.com/Products/Catalog(1199)-SanDisk_Sansa_c200_Series_MP3_Players.aspx
http://www.sandisk.com/Products/Catalog(1220)-SanDisk_Sansa_e200R_Rhapsody_Series_MP3_Players.aspx
Notice that the SanDisk models have expansion slots for memory, does the iPod do that?
Oh well, I think it comes down to a Ford Chevy argument and there is not a right or wrong answer.
But if the 16 year old isn't hip to the MP3 players, then I wouldn't spend the huge chunk of change on a Video POD, get a simple player at a reasonable price. Technology is changing so fast that by the time he/she learns the ropes, a better mouse trap will be out there.

iPods are way over rated. It's nice for what it can do, but once every year or so, you need to get a new one because Apple decide to make a new generation, add more storage space but cheaper price, better backlighting, etc.
So far, I have an iPod 4th gen and an iPod 5th gen. And guess what? They're outdated. iPod 4th gen became obsolete about 3 months after I got it, and that model wasn't made anymore (30 gb). The iPod 5th gen took a price drop about 2 months after I got it, and they stopped making that model (60 gb). too.
So, if you plan on getting an iPod, prepare for a new generation within a year. It's been out since 2001, and there's been 5 generations. So, if it holds form, there should be a new generation next year, and I heard Apple is already working on it.
My advice, get one of the other MP3 players. Forget the Zune. It looks really nice, but is it going to go in the way of the iPod? New model every year or is MS going to keep the current model for a few years before it makes a new model.

Well, I have an Ipod Video and also a Creative Zen. Both are good and has their pros and cons but I strongly recommend get the Ipod Video. When uploading mp3 to the Zen, I notice that it accepts mp3s that are encoded in stereo bitrate and not mono bitrate. I try to upload a mono bitrate of 16Hz mp3 which is an oldies song and when i played it on my Zen, it sounded like an old spoilt record player but on the Ipod, it plays perfectly fine. If your child really uses the recording function like recording lectures, talks or listening to own singing, then go for the Zen. It has that function otherwise go for Ipod.

I am 16, and last year I recieved an iPod Video (30 gig) for Christmas, and have been quite happy with it since, I believe pretty much any iPod is a good choice. Yes, there are people out there that just hate the iPod, but I for one, do not, I also do not understand why they hate it, but, they have a right to feel that way. To me, it is simple, elegant, portable and it has enough storage space for all of my music in a fairly small form factor.

I have a 30gb white ipod & Im 16 got it for xmas last year, have had a little trouble with it but it was still in warranty so I got a perfectly brand new one. Cheapest ipods are about $100 and they are ipod shuffles holding about 100 songs. then theres ipod mini's which come in many diffrent colours for about $300 and then theres ipod videos 30 or 80gb holding 7500+ songs for $500.

I would definitely suggest the iPod Video (which I have and don't regret getting), or the iPod Nano (which is also good). Check out these links to help you out.
