Your sound card could be shot. Click on Start, then go to My Computer, and RIGHT click, choose Properties. A box will appear, choose the Hardware Tab, then Device Manager. This will show all the hardware in your computer. If there is a problem with the sound card, the icon will have a exclamation point (!) in a yellow triangle. If your sound device does or doesn't right click on it, and choose Update Drivers, hopefully it will find one if it's a driver problem. Say your having no luck, download this free program called Advanced Windows Care, hopefully that will fix it if it's a software thing. Lastly unplug your speakers and plug a headset in where the speakers are to see if can hear anything, to make sure the speakers aren't toast. Best of luck

Since it was running a week or so ago, a simple solution may be to run System Restore (assuming you have XP and this feature is turned on). If you have Windows XP click Start/All Programs/Accesories/System Tools/System Restore. Follow the directions and pick a restore date from about two weeks ago. You will lose any installations that you have done in that time period, but you will not lose any files.

Before doing that you may wish to go into Control Panels/Sounds and Audio Devices Properties/Audio (Tab)... Under "Sound Playback" click "Volume" and make sure that the Master Volume is not muted

Also check behind your computer and make sure that some prankster has not disconnected your speakers.
