I would start at the makeup counter of a department store (like Macy's or Dillards/Diamonds), they can set you off on the right foot by finding the shades that compliment your skin, hair and eye color. I prefer Clinique as their products work best for me, but everyone is different and products work differently on each of us. Good luck!

I think the best thing you can do it to go to Sephora or Ulta and ask them to apply makeup on you, and tell you how to put it on. You don't have to buy all the products they reccomend, since I know Sephora especially can be expensive. This should just give you an idea of what you can use. Some of my favorite brands for people just starting out with makeup are id Bare Escentuals, Clinique, Maybelline, Almay and Revlon.

You can try at those big book stores to look for Addy Lee's book on make up. He has great tips on make up for different face types and also how to choose the right make up. Enclosed in the book is also a DVD where you can look at how he apply make up and the tips he gave.
The make up set used was from MAC as they sponsored it. But you need not get from MAC if you have a budget constraint. =)
You can try the make up set from The Face Shop also. =)

I'm probably not the person to be answering, i don't wear makeup that often either, but i tend to prefer something along the lines of skin tone and earth tones. they tend to blend in a little sometimes, but i enjoy them. i personally don't like those really outrageous colors like cherry red and lime green and vivid blue and the such. a good site ( i just found this one and it seems really good) would be www.makeuptips.com. really simple address... let me know how it turns out!

I would go to a department store where they individual make up booths, (Like Clinique, MAC). The people will apply the make up and show you how they did it and make suggestions.

When it comes to covering you face, get dermablend it covers even tatoos, but if you just want eye makeup I prefer the cheap kind. They work just as good. They usually come with insructions on how to use it, mine did.
