Figuring out HOW was not the challenge, as it was nicely inherited from our ancestors. Figuring out how NOT to reproduce took another fifty thousand or so years.

what makes you think caveman particularly wanted to reproduce? They still wanted to have sex, just like everyone modern human and every mammal, reproduction is just the side effect of having sex (at least in an age before contraception). You might as well ask how chimpanzees figured out how to reproduce while your at it. Except we still had language and culture in that time period so the cave man probably figured out alot about sex and reproduction.

I'm rather certain that most prehistoric people figured out that sex makes women pregnant. They could observe that female animals get pregnant soon after mating and start drawing comparisons with humans. Or the old and wise among them could ponder how babies get inside of women and eventually they'd notice that only women who'd had sex had babies later. Eventually, the facts would come out and enter the oral traditions of the cave people. Mothers would start telling daughters who had got their first period that men can make them become pregnant now. I don't think that the prehistoric people were as stupid as some answerers seem to think they were.

Your question seems to derive from the belief of evolution/darwinsm.
From the creationists point of view, it'd be due to the story of Adam & Eve eating the forbidden fruit from the tree of knowledge of good & evil. I wouldn't call it an instinct, but rather the knowledge was passed on into humans with that bite of the fruit.

it is natural. it felt good and therefore they wanted to do it more. that is the whole reason they were there anyways. eat, sleep, have sex. it is the only reason life is here. life exists only for that one purpose... but some people don't seem to think so...

"Figure out"???
Give us a break!!!
Even if - or especially if - you're an Evolutionist, reproduction is not something you 'figure out'!
Adam and Eve, the only two people, stay together.
One day they 'stick together'!
You 'figure it out' from there!!
