North & South by John Jakes I think. Was made into a miniseries with Patrick Swayze. John Jakes has written other novels about the civil war as well.

Check your local library or bookstore for a copy of Stephen Vincent Benet's John Brown's Body.
Believe it or not, it's a book-long novel in poetry about the Civil War, very readable, lots of characters and action, plus love, romance, adventure, true stories and made-up ones, some of it memorable and beautiful as well.
Different, yes, but good!

The Red Badge Of Courage is the best Civil War novel I have read. Also, more recently published, E.L. Doctorow's The March, is very good.

Probably the most famous Civil War story is Stephen Crane's "The Red Badge of Courage."
