Why do you think he said he isn't??

The whole sound and vibe of the song invites comparisons to an LSD trip. I don't think the title Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds was an accident.

"Everyone smiles as you drift past the flowers that grow so incredibly HIGH!

Another line says "climb in the back with your head in the clouds and you're gone!"

The references are unmistakeable. Factor in the year it was released, the known affinity for the drug that John Lennon had, his love of psychedelic sounds, effects and lyrics and I think you have a good case.

He can get away with saying that because they actually said that it was inspired by a painting by one of the Lennon boys when he was little. It wasn't 'Lucy' originally - they changed that for ease of lyrical sound.

Obviously, though, the lyrics that may well apply to a child's imagination and painting can still be interpreted as an LSD trip. Especially as the song-writers were well-versed in both!

Maybe he was embarrased to be tied to the drug or maybe he didn't write it about LSD and it was just thought to be...who know
I just read that John lennon said on the Mike Douglas show back in the 70's that his son Julian brought home a picture of a drawing he did of his friend Lucy, and it had diamonds drawn in the sky, and that 's why Lennon titled the song Lucy in the sky with diamonds....

A lot of actors, singers said they never used drugs when they clearly have. As long as you know what Lucy in the sky is all about, that's the main thing.
Just check the lyrics, if that's not about LSD... All that stuff about marmalade skies, kaleidoscopic eyes.

One of the replies says John said it and not Paul, but the questioner is 100% right. Maybe Paul (my favourite Beatle) is getting slightly embarrassed about his past. Who Knows. If anything good ever came from drugs and there is not much then it has to be some of the Beatles songs!!

Some say Sean, John Lennon's son had a friend that drew a self-portrait with a bunch of diamonds in the sky. Her name was Lucy. It was a coincidence.....or was it?!?!

Its a long running story. John Lennon who actually wrote the song always said he got the idea from one of his son Julians paintings from school. If you do a search on google you can actually look at the original painting and make up your own mind.
Its really about whatever you want to make it about in your head.

It's only serendipity that it could interpreted that way. His daughter drew a picture of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.

It had nothing to do with Paul, or his daughter! Julian Lennon created the "Lucy" picture.

Because LSD is illegal and he didn't want to encourage Beatles fans to take illegal drugs perhaps? Who cares anyway, ? it's a damn good song

"open your mind...."
