Do you think they do it because sometimes the pain they hold within is so great that they actually need to give themselves a valid reason as to why they hurt so bad inside?

Well, there isn't one general reason. Psychologists and other therapists claim that it's because there is pain on the inside that we can't feel, or because we want to control the pain, but for cutters it's not always that simple. The one things that is always certain is that they are in terrible pain and they are sad and depressed and they don't understand why. Some people do it because they want the attention, some people want to hurt themselves because they hate themselves that badly, and some people just need to feel pain. Any reason it may be, they are generally crying out for help.

The bodies response to pain is a rush of endorphines and dopamine to quench it...

I know people who love body piercings for this reason. They often describe a "rush" after the needle has been driven home.

I think your proposal is also a valid reason but for the more 'disturbed' portion of the population... I have experienced great pain internally but not needed to inflict this on the outside...

What people usually say is something along the line of, "They are too stupid to kill themselves" and things like that.
This is just wrong. There can be various reasons, but most of the time it's actually them trying NOT to kill themselves.

It's because they feel that when they're cutting themselves it is not blood flowing but pain. They feel that pain would leave them with the blood. And when you lose too much blood you go into a semi-conscious state, kind of like after drinking alcohol. So it kind of makes them "forget" about their pain

Why do people do drugs? Why do people drink everyday? It's usually an internal battle within themselves. People look for outlets in pretty anything to alleviate stress. Cutting is common.

BUT...right now, a lot of kids are doing it soley for attention.

it is very hard to say, but i am a cutter.
it is something very hard i am struggling with right now. i do it because i have so much pain inside, i feel so rejected, and when you cut, your wrist hurts so badly that you seem to forget about the emotional pain. it is not because i am weird. i am no different than any one else. i just don't know how to deal with my emotions properly. that is why i do it. i is like a "high". sort of like when you take a drug. you feel indescribable. but...just like drugs, you get addicted to it. it may seem hard to understand, but you shouldn't think people are weird because they cut.

That could be the reason. However, some do it to feel alive. They feel lost and this is what they do to feel alive. I am sure that they each have their own "reason" for doing this to themselves.

Few reasons.

1. try to release Anger by focusing on cut
2. Try to understand pain
3. try to get attention
