Dont force him to quit...I quit to make my husband happy...he was my boyfriend at the time...and believe it or not, I regret that decision sometimes, HOWEVER, being able to breathe deeply is totally worth it!
I tried cold turkey, but actually ended up using the patch (which seriously seemed like cold turkey! lol)
However, there are places he could turn to online, such as Committed Quitters (http://committedquitters.quit.com/). The website says, "Committed Quitters® is a special service provided by NicoDerm® CQ® with SmartControlTM, Nicorette® and Commit®. We recognize that every smoker is different, which is why we offer both a choice of stop-smoking Quit Aids and Committed Quitters®, the individualized stop-smoking plan that helps you overcome your unique barriers to quitting smoking."
There is also Quit Smoking Support.com. This website says, "This web site is all about providing exceptional quitting smoking support. Online since 1989, we are one of the most popular and trusted quit smoking web sites on the Internet. I realized the important role the Internet would play in the sharing of information and the major role support could play in helping people to quit smoking."
And for "cold turkey" smoking cessation, try the help from this page: http://www.whyquit.com/
Good luck!!

Sharon H is right ; he has to WANT to quit. That is how I quit: that coupled with fact I was going in for surgery. (And other reasons.)Nicotine thins your blood and slows the healing process. So, I had to quit for at least a week. I decided to quit altogether. It wasn't easy. I can't give you any advice to to help make it easy. This was about my fifth or sixth try. I had used the gum and patch and neither worked. Even will power isn't enough if you're truly committed. But, honestly, different methods work best for different people. So, he may have to "shop around" for the method that works for him.

If he asked you to do this, then how come he doesn't want to at least try? I never smoked, but since I have some sort of career in the medical field, I know what that crap does to your body. Tell him to go cold turkey and keep him occupied with some activities. If that doesn't work tell him to try the gum, patch or lasers. If that doesn't work tell him it's life or death, what's his choice?

A very hard habit to break, I know I did. Tell him every time he has a craving to take 10 deep breathes (that's how many puffs are in a cigarette). See if he'll chew Cinnamon gum, there is something in Cinnamon that helps with cravings. Tell him to keep his hands occupied. Tell him when he's in the house to keep the cigarettes in the car and when he's in the car to put them in the trunk (the more one has to walk for them the less likely they'll smoke them). See if he'll suck on lollipops. Good luck.

I had to use the patch, it was the only way I could give up my
two pack habit of marlboro's a day. I was not on the patch for long
and was amazed that I finally gave them up. I miss smoking every
once in a while.

I smoked from the time I was 14, and three years ago at the age of 57 I just laid the cigarettes down and havn't had one since. I think it has everything to do with wanting to quit, and when he wants to, he will.

I tried for years to get my mother to stop ....it finally took a quadruple bypass in her heart and blood clots in her legs and neck to get the message across. You could hit him with the facts about what it does to your body. Make it so disgusting he doesn't want to think about it...and then remind him every time he goes for a cigarette. They also have technology now that will show you what you will look like in the future when you smoke and things.

my husband tried all of that and it didnt really work but they say it only works if you really want to quit. it seems that for some people is really difficult.
quitting for me was easy. i was smoking too much and one day i thought this is insane, i have to stop and i did. it took me 2 weeks probably and ever since then i havent smoked again.
this is 10 yrs ago and i had smoked for 10 yrs 2 packets a day. awfull!!!! im glad i stop...

you can show him what happens to people that smoke after some years. You can also say you will reward him with something if he stops. telll him to take it slow. Dont do it all at once. tell him one back amonth. Then go from there.
