A font is a "style" (more or less) of writing. It is most frequently used in reference to text typed on a computer.
If you open up a word processor (such as wordpad) you select from a drop-down list various different "fonts" to choose from. Each has it's own look or "style". It's a way to be creative (or professional depending on what your trying to accomplish) with your writing on web-pages, word documents, etc.

A design for a set of characters. A font is the combination of typeface and other qualities, such as size, pitch, and spacing. For example, Times Roman is a typeface that defines the shape of each character. Within Times Roman, however, there are many fonts to choose from -- different sizes, italic, bold, and so on. (The term font is often used incorrectly as a synonym for typeface.)
