Goldfish have a lifespan of twenty or more years (depending on the type of goldfish, could be as many as 50 years) But due to neglect, or just bad care, many people mistakeningly believe that they are only meant to live for 2-3 years, and that anything above that is amazing. You can't be doing too bad if your fish has made it to five. By 5 years old, most goldfish have outgrown small bowls.

The theory that fish grow to siut their tank size is, for the most part, untrue. The fish will stop getting bigger on the outside, but the insides continue to grow, causing the fish to die from cramped organs.

Fancy (fantails, black moors, lionheads, telescope, etc.)goldfish need 20 gallons each, because of the large size they will grow to, as well as the insane amount of waste they put out. Common goldfish (such as comets, those little 20 cent feeders you see at walmart) need as many as 50 gallons of water for fish, and are therefore best suited to ponds.

It sound like ick, which is easily cured with meds, and the right care.

Be good to your goldfish, and he might be around for a very long time.

Sorry, Bif IS dieing.
You had him for 5 years that's a really long "fishy" life.
What a good fish daddy you are!
Fail well Bif the gold fish.

Love goldfish and have several large tanks of exotic (expensive) fish. Much to the extreme disappointment I love Good old fashioned "comet" goldfish, They are my favorite!

for quickly action, do better water replace. Goldfish that sunk to the bottom many times signifies that something is frightening their ability to regulate their buoyancy. it would want to correctly be foodstuff compaction or by way of disease. If that is nonetheless no longer too intense, some water replace would purely remedy the placement. yet when it doesn't, medicine will be required yet I perfer that you're trying the water replace first earlier going for medicine. supply the fish a replace to heal itself if accessible. Do a 20~30% water replace two times a week for now. until eventually they get well (might want to be sure effect after a million week). if you're able to ensure that the temp and pH of your tap water is an same as that on your tank, you may want to boost your water replace to 50~60% yet be constructive to operate your declorination answer. sturdy success.

He may just have ick. I had a goldfish that swan on his side and would rest upside down for the last 2 years of his life. Treat him and the tank for ick and good luck. I hope your fish is just strange like mine was!

If he is swimming on his side he is probably dying. Four or five years in pretty old for a goldfish. You did good. It's just his time to go to the big fishbowl in the sky.

First check the water to make sure it isn't getting toxic.

If it's white fuzzy, it's probably bacterial (flex). I'd treat with a water antibiotic and increase salt to 1 teaspoon per gallon.

If it looks like extra slime (which looks white), rule out water quality problems. If your water quality is good, then treat with something containing formalin and malachite green like quick cure.

I'm not positive, but being a goldfish, it could be either. gold fish usually don't have huge lifespans, and one of mine got a sort of fungus stuff when it got about that old and died. I hope he turns out ok though.
