Hi, My best friend just ran out of insurance, she was covered under her parents and her current job doesn't offer it to her, and she needs to get a gynecological check up to get a Pap Smear, etc... Is Planned Parenthood an afforadable option for her to go to? Please only serious responses. Thanks.

For the person who responded that she had to have a hysterectomy, what state are you in? My friend and I are in New York, and we live in a really nice community, so could it be that the doctors are different in each area? She called her old gynecologist and she cannot afford them without insurance, the lowest they would go is still way beyond her means currently. Thanks everyone so far with the responses. It's a huge help. She's too embarassed to call up Planned Parenthood, so I wanted to get info online for her in hopes that it would encourage her to check into it.

Planned Parenthood is one of the best places to go. They are right up there with the bigitme gynecologist and keep informed about all the perscription medications that may intefere with birth control. Usually all the Planned Parenthood locations have at least one day of the week that you can go in for a full exam for free. If I remember right they also have a deal of asking how much income you have and if you have nothing they will provide all services for free in order to keep as many women as healthy as possible. Check out the web site I have given you it should inform about this sort of stuff.

I went there for years, every year for my annual, because until recently I could not afford a real OB/GYN. I found one by referral, only then was I diagnosed with endometriosis, the PP did not ever notice it, I was undiagnosed for years. Last month I had to undergo a complete hysterectomy because of negligence on the part of PP. I would only go in an emergency, like if you need pills, or if it's all you can afford at the time, but my advice is as soon as you can, get to a real DR. A lot of times you only see a nurse at PP

I am in the same boat...24, college grad, no job yet, need BC, AND recently diagnosed with HPV!!
You know, i just realized that that is their job over there and there is no reason to be embarassed...trust me...there are a lot of people in our situation!
Plus, all the tests that they run are the same as at a regular gyno...i take that back...they are a regular gyno or they wouldnt be practicing!!
Planned parent hood is there to help people like us, so take advantage...we should be grateful that we have a place like planned parenthood to take care of our EXTRA inportant womens health issues!
I could have just skipped my yearly pap smears, but then i wouldnt have found about the HPV and it might have developed into cancer!! Thank God i had somewhere to go to take care of myself! You should too!!
Just remember...that is what they are there for. Just like body waxers are there to wax our crotches!!

yeah, i believe you pay on a sliding scale depending on income. I would get a second opinion if anything comes up though--insurance or no insurance. I used to go there and I had some issues with abnormal paps. They wanted to do a really invasive procedure. I went to a regular gyno and she told me that that wasnt at all necessary. So they are okay for cheap paps but don't depend on them for much else if you can help it.

I would suggest calling them up because they price their services on a sliding scale for various incomes. Does your friend go to college? If she does then most colleges/universities have an on campus student health center that can provide free to low-cost OB services.
There's always the option of contacting your county's public health department to see what kind of facilties or resources are available as well. Good luck to you and your friend.

It is, but be careful for any potential protestors that may be around. I went just to get a check up and for pills and there were protestors screaming and yelling for me about abortions and stuff and I'm like "I'm not even here for that" and they were just like "go to a REAL doctor!" It was annoying. Some locations are worse about it than others. When I made the appointment they warned me about it though.
