Interesting question. Possibly related to our ancestors time in the trees. A strong grip would be essential for survival and this involuntary reflex is a relic from that time.

ummm.... I can bend just my pinky on both my hand and toes, unless you mean all the way down...then it is just because of the muscles in the hand and the way they are connected.
