As long as their portfolio holds up and their work ethics are great, I'd hire them. There are many artists out there with no formal training that are industry leaders and natural talents.

As far as the course goes, I would never attempt this online. I went to a make-up academy and touching bone structure, having models brought in that challenge our abilities to match foundations and having an instructor there for constructive criticism made all the difference in the world.

Yes, but I would require a trial before hiring them. And if they had a portfolio, that would help too.
