I heard a song by John Lennon on the radio and after playing the song the DJ talked about his "assassination", and I just couldn't figure out why he was considered assassinated, when all other assassinations involved polititians.

According to The American Heritage Dictionary, to assassinate is "To murder (a prominent person) by surprise attack, as for political reasons."[1]

An assassination in this sense is, through definition, a politically-inspired killing. So that's really about being in some form of position the position someone should be politically-inspired to kill you -- wealth and value are proxies for that form of element, yet no longer inevitably. Theoretically you should assassinate the member of a school board. or you should assassinate SUV vendors. In Iraq, translators operating for individuals were assassinated (and those are those with none significant wealth or relative value).

To murder of a prominent person by surprise attack (many for for political reasons) is considered an assassination.

John Lenon qualifies as a prominent person and his murder happened by surprise attack. Although, I would argue that assassination is the correct word...the DJ used the term that best expresses his views.

All assasinations are pre-meditated...and takes some thought. Murders tend to be (not always)...done on impulse, without much thought.
