I remember with my ant farm they suggested that you put a small piece of bran flake in there (like, break off a small piece of the flake). I also think you were supposed to put only a few drops of water into the farm...any more than that and you might ruin their tunnels!

And you don't ever have to set them free if you don't want to. They won't mind unless they don't have food or if you don't have eighty bajillion generations of ants.

An ant farm is really cool.
They eat any food source, yet you can get special food for them.
I would only add a couple of table spoons of water in there.

MOST- "ant farm" kits have great instructions.

NO the never need to be "set free" unless you want let them go. Yet if you have raised them- that is kinda cruel, they don't really know how to find real food, so they will die most likely. (sorry)
