i just downloaded a new audio codec so i can play one of my movies. where do i put the following files? iviaudio.ax, mpgaudio.ax, registerfilters-2k.cmd, registerfilters-98.bat

Downloading codecs is just boring and makes your computer bloated. Thats why i always like media players that come everything bundled with and I don't have to worry about extra download.
My one and only best choice: get vlc player(http://www.videolan.org/ ). it will play almost any kind of file in the world! amazing thing, believe me.

Anyway, if you still like the old fashion way of installing codec, then you should download a codeck pack from k-lite. This includes many codec that are often needed. So, you don't have to worry for downloading another one when you play some other video/song etc.

Still, I bet on vlc player. Go try it and you will not look for bloated softwares anymore.
