It just happens to be America's big holiday of the year. Every country has such a holiday, taking a week off or more at some point in the year. In Thailand, it comes in April. In Spain, in March. In Taiwan, the end of January or beginning of February--whenever Chinese New Year comes. It is a time when work can stop long enough for family to come together--in all of these countries.

Because the majority of Americans are spoiled, and materialistic. I believe this 'trend' gets worse with each generation. This year, for example, parents will wait in line for hours to get their child the PS3, spending hundreds of dollars on it. All so they can impress others, and keep their little one from throwing a fit.

Kitty (above) is half right; it is a Christian holiday that was grafted on a much older holiday (the winter solstice) celebrated in northern Europe for thousands of years.
