It takes lots of time to build up a relationship with a shaman to the point where he will trust and respect you unless he has "gone over" to more open communications. In other words, become a bit commercial.
If the latter is not a problem with you, I'd suggest you check out sites in Sedona and other areas where such persons hold classes and give personal sessions. Many of these are not traditional shamans, however, nor are they Native Americans.
If you do a search for "Navajo medicine man" you will find several news stories, such as this one ... http://www.gallupindependent.com/2006/sept/093006sp_nnchant.html ... that give names and general locations of authentic medicine men who seem willing to share their knowldege.

Unfortunately these are not dumb responses, and these are the only ways to make sure you are talking to some one who a group of people considers a shaman, or medicine man. You could just pick a random post off the internet from some one who will charge you money and claims to be a shaman, but you will be wasting your money. Ie: go to the reservation, but calling the tribe will not help.

I guess I'm going to give you what you feel is a dumb response, but you should call the Navaho reservation. You'll probably receive an email address and be able to converse that way.
Good luck and blessings.

Actually, Shamen have to get their wisdom passed onto them from former tribal wisemen and unless you go to a reservation your not going to find a real one. There is no such thing as a free range shamen in America, but there are such in Canada and Mexico where the Indian was not placed in reservations for their own protection.

Why would you want to do that? I thought that the Carlos Castaneda debacle would have cured people of this shaman illusion once and for all.
