What ultimately made life possible for the 'pilgrims' was something akin to capitalism. They started out in more of a commune system, which about killed them off, b/c there's no incentive to work (produce).

You need people that are focused on getting ahead, aggressively.

I know this is a homework question. You need to figure this out yourself, but I will tell you this: That question leaves out the circumstances of the day. There was no easy way to plow things under or clear land, so they had to pick a land near water that would be easy to raise crops on. This experiment was also new to everyone and they went in blind, with just their guts and skills. Under those circumstances, the best one could do is bring all the tools and supplies available and get ready to work. I don't know who or why some one comes up with these questions because you can't plan something when you have no idea what all the problems the Jamestown people faced.

well in modern time, I would locate the Jamestown Colony next to a Walmart. Source of food, source of jobs. And I would hope that a Target would build in that area to get a little competition.
