A guy I worked with used this word when talking about some of his friends, and I asked him about it. To paraphrase his response, he said that it was a disparaging word used to put people like him down for years, and by people of his ethnicity using the word among themselves it took a little bit of sting from the word and made the word not seem as hurtful, mean spirited, or derogatory. Since I am white, the word would still have a hurtful, mean spirited, and derogatory meaning if I were to say it since I had never experienced being called that name.

You're asking this in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered because why??? LMAO!
It's a respect thing. Some people find it disrespectful and some people don't. The hard part (if you decide to use the "N word") is figuring out if you're going to offend anyone.
I personally don't use it.
:)

It should be taboo for all. Some people hear others saying it and think its ok for them to say it as well.

I'm so confused about this too. I don't think the n word should be used, but then again, people have dirty name for white people too. So i think everyone should respect there skin and other ppls skin color, and consider everyone equal! Everyone has their own opinions though

It's all about intention and context. We throw around the words "f@g", etc. among gay people, yet we don't appreciate it coming from someone who is using it to hurt us. Same thing.

In a fair world, all would be even and equal.
I believe the rationale behind the double standard on that word is that those descended from those originally called that are taking away its power by using it.

Will people PLEASE stop asking this stupid-*** question?? None of you really want to understand the answer, you just want to continue to parrot the same question over and over again like some retarded minah bird to justify your rage over the fact that YOU don't get to say it! You know DAMN WELL that the word has different connotations depending on who says it, and YOU KNOW DAMN WELL WHY!!!

I don't think the word should be used at all, but sometimes if someone is of the race they're insulting it "makes things better" or "more okay" in others eyes.

Yes you are right......it's a typical (and rather distasteful) double standard.....black people think they have earned the right to say it amoungst themselves but i think it just encourages EVERYONE to use it......It's a nasty word in general and should not be used....
