With his back to the empty granary, it is easy to ignore the yawning maw of that cold brick cavern. With his back to the hungry neighbors, it is easy to see the happy smile on the well-filled silo's face.

Or you could turn that around for subtler comic effect.

One point missed in your question here is what a granary is for: it's for storing surpluses. If you have hungry neighbors, and an empty granary, there ain't no surpluses--but there might be enough to make a party of the last meal.

I also have a mild queasiness thinking that you (y'all) might count feeding a hungry neighbor as 'charity.' Why isn't it no account, like 'breathing,' something so routine as to be unremarkable?

Ah, well, I'm hopelessly immoral. No point in listening to me. I won't make you feel good about doin' good.

Honey, in the Bible Jesus said that the poor widow woman that gave one mite gave more than all the other people because they gave out if their abundance, but she gave out of her need. We all have something to give and it surely doesn't always mean money. You could donate some time at the food bank, help an old person across the street. Something I did once has stuck in my mind. One day I was going into the post office and here comes this crippled man in a little old motorized chair. The wind blew his hat off and of course he couldn't get it. I not only pick up his hat, but I put it snugly on his head and the smile of an angel lit up his face. We are never too empty that we don't have something to give.

It doesn't take a granary to pour food. All you need is two hands.

And I suppose a modicum of selflessness.

Give labor, give love. Help others with whatever project they need help with. Your labor is a precious gift, and love is free.

Merry Christmas!
