If you really want to wipe the hard drive (Operating System, files, music. documents, pictures, software, everything?) there are several options:

Formatting is easiest, but there is some possibility that the CIA or some hacker can unformat the disk and get some files back.

By the way, formatting and reinstalling your operating system and software is quite good, since most old blocks get overwritten; however, a serious villain could still get some old stuff off the disk.

For the truly paranoid, Darik's Boot and Nuke will reduce your disk(s) to a bunch of quivering bits that not even the NSA can put together. It's free, but running it to this level of security takes time.

I'm not sure I know what you're asking.

Do you just want to delete specific files or wipe everything off the hard drive which includes the Operating System?

Easiest and the fastest way to get rid of any or all of the programs is reinstall the Operating System

The lon way of doing things is in the Control Panel and in Add/Remove Programs.

Single files and folders can just be tossed in the Recyle Bin, and Empty the Recycle Bin to permently remove the files and folders

You have to decide the files to be deleted and use the delete option . If you want to delete all the content in the harddrive, you have to format the drive, in which case all program files will also be deleted. I can give you a link that deals with hard drive problems. Some RAM/ hard drive problems can be easily fixed yourself by using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful

depends on what you mean deleting wiping the hard drive completely using a program that will do a low level format will do great. They call this a gov't wipe it writes over every sector of the hard drive and you can chose how many times you want to do this.

FAT partitions, while at the dos prompt type "format C: /u" the /u is a dos switch for unconditional and will zero the hard drive.

NTFS partitions, when you boot the cd do a full format opposed to quick.

if you really need to destroy data completly redo the format repeatedly or for specific data try norton wipe. before a reformat you might also want to erase the partition (fdisk) itself and re-create a new one. the failsafe method is to remove the hard drive and set it on fire ;)

I use a software called "Speed Tracks Eraser" which runs in stealth and erases programs, cookies etc on a prearranged schedule. It erases it at least 4 times. I have tested with soft ware that retrieves and they brought up nothing, one was supposed to retrieve 97%--it brought up nothing...another brought up unreadable material. This is not free ware but there are others.

Do you want to erase everything that is on there? If so, do system restore without backup. If there are things you want to save, save it onto Cd's or travel drive first. Hope this helps.
