Cutie Stevens was the lead singer's 8th grade girlfriend who broke his heart by kissing his best friend at the time. He was so hurt by the incident that he told her that he wished she would die. He got his wish when she died a week later in a car accident while traveling in a NYC cab with her dad. The incident made a big impact in his life thus naming his band Death Cab for Cutie.

They got their name from a Brittish Jass-Rock-Comedy combo from the Bonzo Dob Dooh Dah Band in the Beatles Magical Mystery Tour Film.
