The older you get, the greater the risk. Abortion, like any major surgery, has both mortality (that's death) and morbidity (that's getting f-ed up) rates associated with it that are not zero. These are a hell of alot higher than childbirth (which is not a medical treatment, condition or anything else appropriately comparable to abortion) like another poster suggested. Like any procedure, the risk goes up as you get older. Also, there is a SIGNIFICANT risk of miscarriage in a later pregnancy if you have an abortion. This is well documented in the peer review medical literature (look it up if you don't believe it). This too goes up as you get older. Lastly, a woman who is 39 is reaching the end of her fertility. Don't be surprised if it's the last pregnancy you have. That is a simple limit of biology and if you don't like it, that is just tough.
