There were three Klans the first fought reconstruction and yankee brutality. The Second Communist, Jews, Gays and scattered foreigners. The third well you know about them. That is why I get upset when people say Bedford Forrest started the Klan, he was a founding member only in the first Klan and quit even them.

The wikipedia answer is good, but frankly I don't know that it tells the whole story....

Other than the awful part of the Klan's history... I have heard stories of folks who said the Klan was used to make men [white] take care of their families if the men were not supporting their wives etc...... I suspect that there was some action to provide better conditions for women etc but the negative aspect of racism overpowered and generally prevailed as the driving force over the years....
