G'day Fresh2,
Thank you for your question.
On the lam is American slang meaning on the run. It is derived from gangster slang from the turn of the twentieth century. The Oxford English Dictionary cits its first recorded usage in Appletons Popular Science Monthly as to do a lam meaning to run. Wikipedia gives its etmyology as coming from lemje an Icelandic word meaning to thrash as in beating a path.
There is also a Scottish expression called on the lamb.
I have attached sources for your reference.
Regards

Well your hand itching on the palm means money coming, the foot eatching means athleet's foot, if your ear itches then somebody is talking about you, nose someone is visiting you, now if your @ss itches that means hemorrhoids, get a brillow pad and scrub that sucker off! Love Pearl

"Lam" means "thrash" or "beat soundly," from the Icelandic, "lemje". The imagery is that one beats the path with one's feet while fleeing quickly.
