ECT is pretty hit or miss. However, it is one of the only treatments left when there is severe, morbid depression that is unresponsive to other treatments (pretty much all its used for these days). It's very much a treatment of last resort. Although it only works about half the time, it DOES work when other treatments fail.

My uncle had ECT, unfortunately, many years ago, and it left him fairly non-functional. I have friends who have had it, and it worked for them. (One other friend who had it many years ago suffered badly too.)

I guess it all depends on how much difficulty you are having. For depression, it seems to work fairly well after exhausting other treatment options.

The friend who had the difficulty had severe problems afterward, including forgetting such things as how to walk, and had to learn these things all over again.
