One way to do this is to remember that:

tan = sin/cos

So tan(a) = sin(a) / cos(a)

= (12/13)/(5/13) = 12/5 or 2.4

We could actually construct the triangle and we'd find that it is a 5-12-13 right triangle with the side of length 12 opposite angle a and the side of length 5 adjacent to angle a.

Here, tan(a) = opposite/adjacent = 12/5 or 2.4

A basic trig identity is

tan a = sin a/cos a

So Tan a = (12/13)/(5/13) = (12/13)(13/5) = 12/5
