Here's the problem: no drug company would be testing the over the counter sleep aid on pregnant women. They would never be dumb enough to possibly endanger a pregnant woman. As a results, it's probably NOT been tested.

Because of this lack of information, the pharmacist is going to be cautious and tell you not to take anything over the counter.

A long time ago a drug called Thalidimide which was given to pregnant women all the time evidently caused SEVERE birth defects. This was in the 1950's. No one wants to re-live that situation. SO BE VERY CAREFUL and probably do not take those OTC sleep aids.

You should not take anything unless your doctor tells you that it is ok. There are very few medications that are sold over the counter that are safe, and I don't know of any sleep aids that are ok. I had a terrible time trying to sleep when I was pregnant and any medication to help me sleep were off limits. The only medication I was allowed to take during my pregnancy was Tylenol, nothing else

Yes, indeed it can. You cannot take any type of medication without clearance from an m.d. first. The first trimester of the pregnancy (the first three months) is the most critical time not to take medication because this is when the most of the harm from medicating happens. Most m.d.s will not even approve for you to take medication the entire pregnancy, not even tylenol. If the person you are refering to has already taken these sleep aids, please advise them at once not to take anymore and to make the doctor aware of the medication that was taken.

My doctor does not even allow Tylenol during the first trimester.

in case your healthcare expert suggested to take it, you're able to be ok, i understand Tylenol wont harm you. in case you're very worried, attempt to stop takin them for awhile, in specific circumstances you get based on OTC drugs and it variety of seems such as you decide on it each and all the time, and you will have a headache without, yet particularly you're merely based on the medicine. solid luck! If no longer the rest, consistent with hazard you are able to stop taking them until eventually after the 1st trimester, or as long as you are able to.

Definite no-no. My doctor didnt want me taking anything, not even Tylenol, unless I absolutely had to. Anything that you take could potentially harm your baby. Talk to your doctor about your sleeping problems, maybe he/she will have a better suggestion. Good luck!

Yes it can be harmful. If you did this not knowing you were pregnant I would just let my ob/gyn know about it. With my last pregnancy I drink some alcohol before I found out I was pregnant. I worried and worried over it, but he came out as healthy as can be. good luck
