Very random question. But if not, what other feline creatures are native to that area? I'm stumped.

No, they are NOT native to Japan. Tigers ARE native to China, but only crouching ones.

No, as you already know, tigers are not native to Japan!

I'm aware of some sort of wildcat - probably the one in Joriental's link..!

When I first came to Japan, my husband told me an old story about how when Japanese soldiers were first sent to set up residence in part of mainland Asia (not sure which part, or which year, I only remember the basics,) most of them got eaten by these strange, large, stripy wildcats that they'd never even DREAMED of before...!!! They didn't even get the chance to do any real fighting - the tigers took care of THAT!
Yikes..!

No, historically they roamed from Russia through to Indonesia but their territory is a little more limited these days. I'm not sure what kind of wildlife is native to Japan though, sorry.

the main wildlife in japan is deer, bear etc. and of course they have imported animals and birds.
A huge problem at the moment is the Karasu or crow. its way bigger than ones from other countries I have seen, they swarm the skies making them black as the sun is setting - creepy!

Finding this kind of local info is not easy. cos most info is written in Japanese.
You say "feline", then "Iriomote Yamaneko" is one of them. "neko" means cat.
This cat is wildlife and specified as a natural monument by Japanese government.
You can watch this on TV sometime, however, meeting this cat is very difficult.

(The Iriomote Wildcat in the Ari's link is the same.)

There is also domestic cat in the main island of Japan, called Nihon-neko (Japanese cat).
This is not wildlife, and brought by Chinese to Japan during 8th century.
Their color vary
White, white/black, white/brown, brown, three colors, etc.
Especially the three colors is called with its popular name,
"Mike neko" (mee-kay nay-ko: means three colors cat), and also popular to the western ppl who love Japanese cat.

You asked very good question thanks for that I have never thought of it. Because of you I also learned.

There are about 188 species of mammals on the islands of Japan. There are approximately 665 species of birds and 30,146 species of insects. Wildlife is very important to the Japanese culture.
