What is the correct term for the openings on top of fortresses? I know they have a name. I'm writing a paper and need to know what they are called.

The open-topped ones are indeed crenellations, but the closed-around ones are machicolations.

IF ITS IN A SOLID WALL IT IS AN ARROW LOOP, BUT ON TOP LIKE THE PICTURE YOU SHOW IT IS A CRENELLATION
