I could have sworn that it used to be spelled learnding, with the 'd'in it. Or am I just going crazy?

You are not crazy... This is one of the original combinations of the words "learing" and "finding", which would mean to search for answers... Before this form we had the word "lordigazing".

LEARNING TO SPELL LEARNING HAS ALWAYS BEEN A LEARNING ENDEAVOR. LEARNING HAS ALWAYS BEEN SPELLED LEARNING. People and kids who do not speak proper English or who are speakers of another language often apply phonics rules where they don't acutally apply.

No, i don't think so maybe in the ancient Rome or some other place that's how they spelled it.
