Elder and middle-age people don't really speak languages. However, since Debrecen has a large university, I'm sure you'll be able to speak with the younger generation.

Debrecen's a great university town. Most people under 30 speak at least a little English and you won't have a problem, say, in a bar or dance club. But grocery shopping or doing "official" things (post office, transportation and so on) may be tougher. That said, the University of Debrecen is generally reknowned throughout the world for having the best course for the study of the Hungarian language. (So much so, they've even opened a branch in Budapest!) I took a three week course from them (I already knew some Hungarian) and absolutely loved it. In three weeks, you can learn enough to get around reasonably well . . . and the Hungarians would love you for it. Consider it if you have time, but otherwise you'll be fine.

Debrecen is an important city in Hungary. People are ok there. I am sure you can manage with English there. Young people speak English all over eastern European countries. Don't be afraid. You'll feel ok there. Good luck !

You will be able to communicate with some of them. Older people are more likely to speak German. Younger people might know some English. Debrecen is a university town so might have some people who speak English.
All that said, people are friendly and open to communication, just approach them. People in Hungary are certainly very used to foreigners not speaking their native tongue so it won't be anything shocking to them.

I found that when I was in Hungary, almost no one spoke English when you're outside the large cities (ie. Budapest).
