Historically, when people were crucified by the Romans the crosses were built low to the ground so wild animals or packs of dogs could get at the bodies of the crucified. If the people were already dead from the beatings, exposure to the elements, blood loss or suffocation--then it didn't matter. If the people were still alive then the wild animals or dogs would hasten the departure.

It would depend on how tall the cross is.

It doesn't matter how high--just that the person is nailed (or tied), bleeding, and can't touch the ground.
