I've had a trampoline since I was a young child.

Backflips are only difficult because it's not the direction you're looking and it's scary.

It's physically easier to do a backflip than it is a front flip.

Get used to going backward (on a trampoline) by doing back drops.

It's counterintuitive, but be sure your head remains level with your body and let your head meet the mat at the same time as your body. If you try to hold your head away from the mat, it will whip down to the mat due to its weight and momentum.

Once you have gone feet to back successfully a few times, give yourself plenty of room behind you and let your legs to over your head when you back drop, and they will carry you the rest of the way over to a crawl position. Then try to start landing flat on your front after going back from the back drop.

When you get used to the feeling of going backward, skip the step where you land on your back, and go all the way from feet, backwards onto your tummy. This will automatically set you onto your feet afterward.

When this is no longer scary, get some height and go all the way over onto your feet.

You won't believe how natural it feels, and how much easier it is than a front flip from feet to feet.

Practice first on a trampoline, then move to the ground/grass.

Start standing. Bend your knees a little bit, then start to lean back. While you are leaning back, you should be ready to push your feet off the ground as hard as you can. Jump up, back, spin around, and tuck your legs into your stomach REAL TIGHT. You should be rotated over by now and landing on your feet.

It is really hard to tell you how to do this over the Internet, so it might sound confusing, but just practice and have to instructors help you and spot you.

PS I do not recommend doing this unless you are surrounded by trained professionals in a gym with the correct equipment for your own safety. You can get seriously injured and even die (sorry to sound so depressing!).

check out www.drillsandskills.com, they not only give you step by step instruction, they give you video clips of the tricks. You should have proper training, stretching, and conditioning to do this skill. There are tricks that you learn first before a back handspring or back tuck. Recreational classes are very inexpensive and you go once a week from 45 min.-1 hour. Get proper training, and don't risk an injury, especially to your back.. Good luck!!

If you want a decent backhandspring, you need to have a solid handstand and be able to do a great 'bridge' and rocks. Without having the ability to do those, doing a bhs will be very hard. If you look closely at this series of in-motion pcitures you will see the gymnast as she throws herself back into a bridge, then again as she passes through a handstand position. http://www.gymnasticsrevolution.com/GymInteractive-Floor-BackHandspring.htm

You need to get to a gymnastics or cheerleading training center where you can be correctly guided through learning to do them. Trying to throw yourself backwards and upside down on your own could result in head or neck injuries, so be smart and be safe and get to a certified tumbling coach.

Try to join a gymnastics gym, and practice on a trampoline. Be careful as you can get injured if not spotted properly.
