actually ladybugs are predacious, they feed upon any other insects smaller than themselves. Their preferred food however is aphids. Aphids are very slow moving gregarious insects, this allows the ladybugs to simply graze on them like cattle do in a pasture.
Even the larvae of ladybugs are tiny little predators, they also eat aphids as well as any other crtters they find hiding on or under leaves.

Aphids, these tiny green bugs that make a sweet sap. Some ant species have been known to befriend them. Ladybugs are real helpful on vegetables, because that is what APHIDS eat.

I use them to eat the Aphids on my tomato and pepper plants. They're a big help, and I don't have to use pesticides.
