The best way is to use a sex probe...rather like a knitting needle with a small ball on the end. This is inserted into the anus and then gently eased back towards the end of the tail. If the ball (or instrument stops only in a short distance, then the snake is a female, but in a male, the instrument will enter much farther (into the hemipenes or the male sex organs of the snake) However you can judge also by the tail, males have a shorter, chunkier tail whereas the females have a much longer tapered tail....this works if you have some experience or have several snakes to observe. Be gentle with the sex probe as you may injure the hemipenes. The hemipenes are the copulatory organ of snakes and are paired but only one is used during mating.

xxmack, are you reffering to the vestigial claws? No offense to you, but those are found in the females as well. I have 2 females and 2 males (and the females have not only been probed, but been bred successfully) and all of them have the vestigial claws. The vestigial claws are only an occurence in the Boid family (which includes the Royal, or "Ball" Python). The only reliable way to tell the difference between the male and female is probing, which should only done by someone experienced and knowledgable about reptiles. But visually, the tail ( the length from the cloaca to the end of the tail) in males is longer and more evenly tapered, while the female has a shorter tail that tapers more quickly. Contact a local vet who is experienced with reptiles and ask how much it would be to probe your snake. It shouldn't be a lot. It is also a good idea, esp. if your snake is new to you, to have an exam and check a stool sample for parasites. Good luck!!!

a male will have a shorter fatter tail. Then the females.
another way is by "popping".Place the thumb of one hand on the anal scale and used to gently pull the scale forward. exposing and slightly opening the vent. The thumb of the other hand is placed on the subcaudal surface of the base of the tail and applying gentle pressure with a rocking motion toward the vent, attempts to evert the hemipenes of males. But this method is only good on hatchlings. The best way is to have the snake probed. This must be done by a pro.

No offense to the other answer but there is an easier way. The male has 2 hooks on his vent. These are used to hold onto the female during mating.

Both sexes wtih have similiar tail size and both have spurs near their vent.

If they are babies still you can pop them. Or probing is usually 85-99% effective and accurate. Either way should only be preformed by an experienced vet or breeder.
