Maybe the baby is actually scared the vacuum will hear him crying and come suck him up, so he shuts up as to not inform the beast as to his wear-abouts

They are not only distracted by the competing sound, they sense that the sound has drowned out their crying; babies ordinarily cry for something they want, and satisfaction depends on being heard. If they sense they can't be heard, and if they are not in real pain, they often stop until you turn off the other noise.

Some say they interpret the vacuum and other sounds as some sort of sympathetic response as well, but I think it's a combination of all these things. You seldom find one thing alone to be the cause of any particular human behavior.

It doesn't make all babies stop crying. It depends on the child's preference of noise. Some babies cry more with the vacuum cleaner running.

I believe it is the humming sound that soothes some babies.

The theory is that when the baby is in the womb, some of the first things they can hear are very rhythmic, the mother's heartbeat, breathing, digestion, etc. Hearing something that is constant or rhythmic like a vacuum cleaner reminds them of the comforting feeling of being in the womb.

The "white noise" from the sweeper is very soothing and comforting. Most anything with a motor can do the same trick.

I, myself, find the sound of a sweeper to be comforting; maybe it has something to do with a sense of security or "home." I asked my mother once if I had been a colicky baby because I find this sound so soothing, but she told me I wasn't.

A vacuum produces "white noise" which babies really like, so yes it can. Also a radio or tv on the "static" station, a fan or such work well too.

Because the vacuum's louder than they are, and they're too young to know the meaning of the word 'compete'.

The white noise reminds them of the comfort they felt in the womb, it sounds a little like all the bodily fluids moving around an unborn baby, and gives them that sense of comfort they felt in mummy's tummy :)

babies like white noise like vacumns, dryers, fans, water running. It is very soothing to them and usually makes them not only stop crying but fall asleep as well.
