There are a few different things. If it comming from outside or under the car most likely it is the throw out bearing which releases the pressure on the pressure plate allowing you to change gears. That old and that many miles someone may have opted to just change the clutch disk to save money. You may want to get a clutch kit and replace everything if that is the case. Keep in mind that it's gonna be a lil pricey to do it at a shop. make sure it's worth spending the money on it before doing it. If the noise is inside the vehicle when you depress the clutch it is probably just dirt and rust built up on the clutch pedal assemble. Spray a cloth with silicone spray and clean it up.

I think is the throwout bearing or the pilot bearing but to be sure do this test
1-start the engine, now with the engine running transmission in neutral and the car not movig you should'nt hear that noise that you described, now press the clutch little by little until you feel that the throwout bearing makes contact with the pressure plate if don't hear that noise then your throwout bearing is good release
the clutch pedal
2-press the clutch pedal all the way down until it bottoms if you hear the noise that you describe then is your pilot bearing (pilot bearing it's located inside the fly wheel center hole)if you don't hear the noise then it's something else good luck

it truly is about what it really is wisely worth. i'd perchance communicate him down somewhat, although the vehicle does e book at $1850 contained in the topic you defined. i'd make sensible that's in respectable mechanical structure so that you're literally not spending money on it instantly. seem lower than the vehicle for any leak spots, seem lower than the hood for any attainable moist spots on the engine, signifying fluid leaks. i'd also examine the air filter out to work out if that's been replaced those days. this may properly be a reliable indicator of ways properly the vehicle has been maintained through the years. i'd also examine the engine oil and note if it nevertheless seems reliable or if it appears that evidently jet black on the dip stick. also see if there are any metallic filings contained in the oil which may element out the maintenence hasn't been done. reliable luck! purely save your head on instantly and also you'd be high quality!

your throw out bearing is probably going bad. might as well change the clutch and pressure plate while you are there. 242k miles I'm impressed.....keep it going
