In America they come to your door trying to sell whatever it is they're selling, a salesman basically. Some people put tiny signs on their doors asking that no solicitors visit their home. Sometimes these people listen, other times they ignore the persons request.

It's different in the UK - where I live now - I've heard people refer to a solicitor as an "Attorney" and they are also the people who do the legal deeds for your home.

In England and Canada, a solicitor is a lawyer who does not do court work. The barrister is the lawyer who appears in court. Sometimes a lawyer is a barrister and solicitor. The solicitor often supervises a case and the barrister represents the client in court.
