Ayla is a modern woman as opposed to Neanderthals like the Clan. Ayla as Mother is an interesting concept. To me she represents a successful experiment of nature. Neanderthals lived for hundreds of thousands of years, yet ultimately proved to be a failed experiment. Good question.
