My son has a fever of 103.6, and it has been there for the last hour. Well, this morning he had a fever of 103, but it broke after tylenol and motrin and a cool bath, however this time I had to give him tylenol and motrin both an hour early, and so far it hasn't broke....... my ???? is should I wait it out until tomarrow and take him to a doctor, or should I take him to the ER tonight..... past experiences with the ER is simple... they sent me home everytime, and I wasted money to go there for nothing.... and then I wuold end up at the doctors a couple of days later.. and since I just gave him tylenol and motrin an hour ago.... I was thinking about waiting a little longer to see if it breaks, and if it keeps going up I'll take him. But my husband on the other hand says to wait, so... if anyone has dealt with this, what will the ER do if not send me home... If I can't get it to go down.. what will happen?? Also my son is 2 years old. Thanks!!!

Ok to betty B....... I have been told by the docs not to go unless it it over 104.5... they said that betwen that and 105 will start to cause brain damage....... so don't treat me like I am stupid........ Also last winter my son had an ear infection that lasted for 4 months and he was constantly throwing up and had the runs as well as had a fever of at least 102.5.... so I have some experience daeling with his fevers........ I only want helpful nice opinions... not a rude *** with rude ones.... thank you very much.....

Same experience with my daughters. You can alternate Tylenol and Motrin every 45 minutes, for 3 cycles safely. Cycle them only until the fever starts to come down, and it may not break all the way. Make sure you're giving him plenty of water with salt and sugar (home made Pedialite) and let him play in the bathtub. Let the water be just warm, and let him play until it cools off. Get some popcicles too, those help cool him off and hydrate him. My husband says that 102 fever is okay for kids with no meds because it's the body trying to fight whatever it is, start medicating at 102.5. Sorry your baby is sick. It sux.

I should clarify:
Check your child's belly and back for a rash, often is a symptom of Strep or other virus. Also check for swollen lymph nodes behind his ears, another symptom of a virus.

102 is a high fever for babies, but for toddlers it's not considered THAT high, but if continues to rise, it often results in febrile seizures, then it's time for the ER.

forget what anyone says and what it will cost u ur baby is first than anything don't wait till is to late a fever is a sign of infection and if the fever does not go down ur baby can have seagours wich can cause brain damage so take him to the er, after u gave him tylenol and motrin the fever should have gone down a little in half an hour if it did not than take him in and keep him with loose cloths like a shirt and socks so it wont rise more and make sure he is drinking plenty of fluids take care.

as a mother of premie twins, I have learned that it's not how high the fever or low the fever but how the child reacts. If the fever is High and child is still active I would suggest monitor fever and do all that you can (tylenol, motrin etc) If the fever is High and the child is lathargic(sp) meaning just laying their then go to the e.r. right away. This is true for low fevers aswell. My dd would go from 98.6 to 104 in a heart beat. If she was running around playing ped said to watch her, but the minute it went 104.1 or she got very lazy off to the e.r. The best thing is to always call your Ped and see what he/she says. I understand money but sometimes we just have to loose a little money to raise a child...Oh and tylenol and motrin should be given seperate at least 2 hrs apart. Good luck and hope he feels better soon.

Follow your first mind. Take him to the ER, even if they are sending you home.

When my son was 2 yrs old, he had a seizure because his fever was too high. It was 103 and I had taken him to the doctor before that.

You have to be vigilent in getting the fever down and if you can't get it to break within an hour or so, you need to take him to the hospital so they can get it down. I learned that you have to give them a cool bath every other hour until the fever remains down.

Better safe than sorry!!!!

Take him to the ER anyway; better safe than sorry. And try Ibuprofen; it's a fever reducer.

I'll say give him another cool bath and wait for another hour if the fever doesn't go down then go to the ER.
