What is the origin of "Teddy Bear"?
(Definitions)

As folklore has it, teddy was born in 1902, when President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt was taking a well-deserved break on a shooting trip in Mississippi. When the local game failed to show up, aides captured and stunned a bear cub and offered it to Roosevelt to finish off. Deeming this "unsporting," the president declined. His act of mercy was caricatured in the next day's Washington Post. The cartoon caught the eye of New York sweet shop owner Morris Michtom, who asked his wife to make a toy "Teddy's bear" to go in the shop window by the drawing. Back came an anthropomorphised bear, a marketing coup so successful that within a year the Michtoms had shut up shop to start the Ideal Novelty and Toy company, now one of the largest in the world.

The Teddy Bear is named after President Theodore Roosevelt. He was hunting and unable to find a bear, despite help from hunting scouts. Three days into the hunting expedition they came upon an old bear. The President refused to shoot the bear for sport but did ultimately decide to have the bear put down since it was old and injured. A cartoon by Clifford Berryman appeared in newspapers. Morris Mitchcom saw the cartoon - his wife made two stuffed teddy bears - Mr Mitchcom put them in his shop window and named them Teddy Bears...the rest is history!

Theodore Roosevelt...AKA Teddy. He loved bears and, well, the story above explains most of it. He was nicknamed Teddy before the bear was though. He didn't get the nick name from the bear...jsut wanted to clarify.

Theodore Roosevelt because, as the story goes, he found a baby bear while hunting and didn't want to kill it.
