Something becomes real to you when you "realize" it.
For example, in the corner of your eye you see a shadow moving. It is not yet real to you. Then you turn your head to find out what it was. It is still not yet real to you. Then you find that there was a little cat that is standing in the corner. It is still not real to you. Then you try to make the connection to between the moving shadow and the little cat. It is still not real to you. Finally, you realize that "yes, it was the cat, because it could have moved at that speed, and cast a shadow that size and direction away from you. Thats when you realize that it was real.
The cat, I mean.
Something becomes real when you are convinced that it is.

re·al·i·ty (r-l-t)
n. pl. re·al·i·ties
The quality or state of being actual or true.
One, such as a person, an entity, or an event, that is actual: “the weight of history and political realities” (Benno C. Schmidt, Jr.).
The totality of all things possessing actuality, existence, or essence.
That which exists objectively and in fact: Your observations do not seem to be about reality.
That's what the dictionary says...at least dictionary.com. I think to make something real you have to believe in it. Real love is when you just can't take your eyes off that guy/gurl. You have passionate feelings for him or her. Or you could be talking about reality you can touch - something in existence. Which is the bland kind of reality the dictionary talks about.

Reality is that which exists outside of our belief, attitude and perceptions. Read John Searle's, " The Construction of Social Reality ". ( not to be confused with social constructionisim ) In this you will find a good defense of reality.

Solipistically speaking, things are real because someone is acknowleging it at some point in time with one of their senses. If you believe in God, then God acknowleges everything in his domain, so therefore, everything exists.
