I seen in a movie or a survival show that one can be made this way with just a book of matches and water

In a survival situation, I'd sooner keep the matches dry and just see which direction the shadows fell in the afternoon - that's east - the other three directions then become pretty evident.

No, there's nothing magnetic in matches. You need a magnet to make a low tech compass.
