nelly, i read your comments. this is no blood vessel. it is a string that reaches the ground on either side of the hen and is tied in a knot on both sides at skin level. we've tried to remove it, but it will have to be cut out. we live in a very rural area, and there have been many occasions when witchcraft and voodoo are practiced here. the hen's feathers are intact also. no real injuries are visible. it's as if she just suddenly has this long red string running through her body. and it was not there a couple of days ago. we've had her for 2 yrs. now.

I have never seen a red string under the skin. Like Dainelle said it is probably an artery. It is probably the artery that leads to the brain or the one that supplies blood flow to the head. I suggest looking up chicken anatomy. I serious doubt a string was embedded in the skin of a chicken. That is not possible.
